Bill Maher’s new rule is that the media are no longer allowed to ask presidential candidates anymore if they’ve smoked pot, because the answer will always be “yes” and nobody cares.
What Maher does care about, however, is the discrepancy between the amount of both Democratic and Republican politicians who have admitted to smoking versus the obscene amount of Americans arrested and incarcerated for pot.
In the latest episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, the host cited several Republican presidential hopefuls who have fessed up to smoking weed, including Senator Ted Cruz’s latest admission that he “foolishly experimented with marijuana,” and that it was a mistake.
“This is the standard answer we get from all these guys nowadays, some form of ‘Hey, when I was young and stupid, I was young and stupid, it’s no big deal,’” said Maher. “Which is great, except that’s not a defense that’s really available for most of the 700,000 Americans that get arrested every year.”
The host then called on Obama to put an end to the War on Drugs.
“C’mon man, you’ve gone down the list reversing the stupidities of the past: health care, torture, gay marriage, immigration, Cuba…it’s pot’s turn,” said Maher.
