Jeff Sessions Confirmed as Attorney General

The Senate confirmed Jeff Sessions as the next Attorney General just about an hour ago. The vote of 52-47 was mostly along party lines, with only Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia voting yes. Given his history, there’s not much hope he’ll take steps to end the drug war but during his confirmation hearings last month he did at least state that he felt disrupting states’ legal marijuana markets by enforcing federal marijuana laws would create an undue strain on federal resources. On the other hand, in response to a question from Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Sessions said he “won’t commit to never enforcing federal law.” Regardless, it’s up to the people now more than ever to lead the way and increase the pressure to finally end the failed war on drugs.
